Flexi-Care: Revolutionising Wheelchair Safety
Introduction:
Flexi-Care emerged from a collaborative effort between myself and a course mate, aimed at enhancing wheelchair safety and control. This innovative system, designed to be retrofitted onto wheelchairs, boasts a universally compatible mounting system.
Features:
Unlike traditional brakes, Flexi-Care introduces a groundbreaking solution with its Automatic Braking System (ABS), prioritising safety and control. Powered by a removable 9V battery, it features simple yet robust mechanical components, including a spring-action release mechanism that automatically engages the brake. Additionally, users can manually operate it using the brake handles.
Functionality:
The system's intelligence lies in its integration of a rotary encoder and accelerometer sensors, enabling it to detect sudden, accidental changes in direction. For example, it can swiftly identify instances such as unintentional backward movement down a slope and promptly engage the brake to prevent further motion.
Conclusion:
Flexi-Care represents a significant advancement in wheelchair technology, offering users enhanced safety and convenience. By prioritising both safety and ease of use, it sets a new standard in wheelchair design and functionality.
